city2science is a German company for science communication and strategic consulting, founded in 2012 by CEO Dr. Annette Klinkert. Based on many years of management-experience in the fields of city-management and science communication, city2science supports local stakeholders, policy makers, universities and scientific institutions by providing strategic consulting and innovative communication strategies connecting science, city and society.

city2science GmbH initializes and organizes dialogues between representatives of universities, local decision-makers, cultural institutions, companies, policy makers, citizens and media. Within this process, stakeholders of cities and scientific institutions are motivated to develop a mutual understanding of their specific challenges and capacities in a local, national and international context.

Having conducted a large number of science-communication-events and policy-related strategies of strategic city management, city2science coordinates and supports sustainable alliances in cities and regions by encouraging dialogue-oriented processes on a national and international level. Interactive, accessible and individually designed formats of science communication are designed to strengthen local identities, open dialogues and motivate citizens to become active stakeholders of a knowledge-based society. city2science exchanges ideas and best practices with science communicators and city-stakeholders throughout Europe.

In January 2013 city2science was appointed by the European Science Events Association (EUSEA) as Project Officer within the European Platform of Local Authorities and Communicators Engaged in Science (PLACES). In this project, 60 institutions from 27 countries develop concepts for a European “City of Scientific Culture” (


Dr. Annette Klinkert

Dr. Annette Klinkert, founder and CEO of city2science GmbH, received her PHD in American literature at Albert Ludwigs-University in Freiburg. Before starting city2science in 2012 Annette Klinkert worked within the city marketing company Bielefeld Marketing GmbH as project manager and head of the departments City Management, Event Management and the Science Office. She initiated and coordinated a large number innovative international science communication formats and is the director of the European Science Engagement Association, the European Network of Science Centers and Museums. She is regularly invited as lecturer and workshop-leader at national and international Science Communication conferences.
Esther Rüßler
Esther RüßlerProject Manager
Esther Rüßler supports the team of the city2science GmbH as project manager since 2014. After studying dramatics at Mainz University and Université de Nanterre (Paris), she is responsible for the concept development and implementation of local and regional science communication formats, i.e. the European Students Parliament of Science and Science Night Ruhr. She organised the Dortmund Mini Maker Faire 2014, supported the Maker Faire Ruhr and was responsible for organising the Maker Faire OWL 2019. Esther Rüßler is profoundly experienced in HORIZON 2020 proposal development processes, including structural requirements, content and approach. From 2019-2021 she coordinated the RDF-Project “Make OWL” that was aiming at creating a Maker culture in East Westphalia-Lippe.
Minea Gartzlaff
Minea GartzlaffProject Manager
Minea Gartzlaff is part of the team since January 2019. With a Bachelor degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Science studies she is an expert in the Philosophy of Science and specialised in the relation of science and society. While supporting proposal writing processes at city2science and designing and facilitating public engagement Trainings she also is a PHD student at Bielefeld University.
She is experienced in both – working in EU and DFG funded projects. Currently she is responsible for the concept and organisation of the Social Makerthon #CreateYourope.
