Project Description

city2science was appointed by the Ruhr Regional Association as the strategic partner for the program design, concept and approach of this challenging science festival.

Science Night Ruhr is one of the youngest and largest science festivals in Germany. The event is designed as a regional, family-oriented Discovery Tour, leading thousands of visitors to various Hubs of Innovation in the Ruhr region – one of the most densely populated urban areas in Germany. Developed in a collaborative, interdisciplinary process with a premiere in October 2014, the concept of Science Night Ruhr invites early career scientists, professors and high-level experts, entrepreneurs and artists to turn the post-industrialized Ruhr Metropolis into a swirling Laboratory of Ideas. The second Science Night Ruhr took place on 30 September 2016. The third Science Night Ruhr will take place on 28 September 2018.

Main target groups of Science Night Ruhr are school students and families, as well as citizens of all ages and backgrounds. While the main target group are people living in the Ruhr region, the festival reaches out to citizens in all of North-Rhine Westphalia. The polycentric event unites stakeholders from academia, municipalities and cultural institutions, as well as companies and non-governmental-organizations, in a collaborative effort: Science Night Ruhr is seen as a core element and landmark of an ongoing regional development strategy focusing on research and innovation as driving forces of sustainable growth and inclusive societies in times of severe structural transformation. Among the central aims of this strategy is the attraction and active development of young talents within the region.
