Sometimes, future scenarios take shape when we start to playfully “click” our ideas together. At yesterday’s opening workshop of the new certificate program “Co-Creating Knowledge – Collaboration and Co-Creation for Changemakers”, participants used LEGO bricks and storytelling cards to imagine shared futures and turn ideas into collaborative projects.

The program brings together 40 participants from universities and city administration, to strengthen cooperation at the intersection of science, urban strategies, and administrative practice – joining knowledge-based urban development with engaged research.

city2science had the pleasure of conceptualising this programme and facilitating this kickoff workshop, in close cooperation with the organiser UniverCity Bochum. During the day, participants explored expectations, shared perspectives, and began forming thematic project groups – guided by creative methods like storytelling with Points of You® cards and LEGO scenario building to identify common themes and visions. These playful yet powerful tools helped unlock imagination, spark dialogue, and create shared understanding across disciplines and institutions.

Building on the success of the 2024 pilot, the 2025 edition of the program deepens the focus on practical relevance, communication and reflection skills, and individual learning paths. As the program evolves, participants will develop sustainable cooperation projects that strengthen the link between science and the city.

A heartfelt thank-you to all participants for their openness and enthusiasm — and to Lisa Schiemenz and Sherin El Safty from UniverCity Bochum for the great collaboration in making this inspiring start possible! A big thank you to Dr. Verena Molitor for the excellent co-facilitation!

We look forward to many creative ideas, strong partnerships, and stories that will shape the cities of tomorrow. 🌍✨
